Business Analyst resume do's and don'ts

  • Do: Lead with savings and efficiency: “Delivered 18 projects that saved $3.6M annually.” Don't: List duties without results: “Responsible for gathering requirements and writing documents.”
  • Do: Name your data and modeling tools — SQL, Tableau, Power BI. ATS keyword matching is literal. Don't: Write “various reporting and BI tools” and expect the parser to guess what you used.
  • Do: Show analysis, not just documentation: requirements gathering, gap analysis, process improvement, UAT. Don't: Frame the role as note-taking and status decks — that reads as coordinator scope, not analyst scope.
  • Do: Quantify impact: dollars saved, percent efficiency gained, hours saved, accuracy, turnaround time. Don't: Claim you “improved processes” or “supported the business” with no number attached.
  • Do: Spell out the acronym once: “business requirements document (BRD)” and “user acceptance testing (UAT).” Don't: Keyword-stuff — repeating “analysis” twenty times reads as filler to reviewers and scoring engines.
