Data Analyst resume do's and don'ts
- Do: Lead with business impact: “Delivered analyses that drove $5M in cost savings.” Don't: List tools without outcomes: “Responsible for building reports and dashboards.”
- Do: Name your stack — SQL, Python, Tableau, Power BI, Excel. ATS keyword matching is literal. Don't: Write “various data and visualization tools” and expect the parser to infer them.
- Do: Show the insight-to-decision arc: statistical analysis, A/B testing, and the actions your data drove. Don't: Frame the role as pulling numbers — that reads as report-runner scope, not analyst scope.
- Do: Quantify impact: dollars saved, percent improvement, hours saved, accuracy, decision time cut. Don't: Claim you “provided insights” or “supported decisions” with no number attached.
- Do: Spell out the acronym once: “extract, transform, load (ETL)” and “key performance indicators (KPIs).” Don't: Keyword-stuff a wall of every tool you've opened — reviewers and parsers discount it.
