Technical Writer resume do's and don'ts
- Do: Lead with documentation impact: “Reduced support tickets by 35 percent by owning developer docs for 12 APIs.” Don't: List duties without results: “Responsible for writing and updating documentation.”
- Do: Name your toolchain — Markdown, Git, docs-as-code, Swagger/OpenAPI. ATS keyword matching is literal. Don't: Write “various documentation tools” and expect the parser to guess what you used.
- Do: Show systems thinking: information architecture, single-sourcing, style guides — not just writing pages. Don't: Frame the role as proofreading — that reads as editor scope, not technical-writer scope.
- Do: Quantify impact: ticket deflection, findability, onboarding time, hours saved for engineers. Don't: Claim docs were “clear and helpful” with no metric attached.
- Do: Spell out the acronym once: “application programming interface (API)” and “information architecture (IA).” Don't: Keyword-stuff — repeating “documentation” twenty times reads as filler to reviewers and engines.
