Software Engineer resume do's and don'ts
- Do: Lead every bullet with impact and a number: “Reduced API p95 latency from 820 ms to 210 ms.” Don't: List duties without results: “Responsible for writing code and fixing bugs.”
- Do: Name your exact stack — TypeScript, React, Node.js, AWS, PostgreSQL. ATS keyword matching is literal. Don't: Write “various languages and frameworks” and expect the parser to infer your skills.
- Do: Show engineering maturity: unit testing, CI/CD, code review, and system design — not just features shipped. Don't: Frame the role as closing tickets — that reads as junior scope regardless of your level.
- Do: Quantify performance and reliability: latency in ms, test coverage, crash rate, deploy time. Don't: Claim you “improved performance” or “wrote clean code” with no number attached.
- Do: Spell out the acronym once: “continuous integration / continuous deployment (CI/CD).” Don't: Keyword-stuff a skills wall of 60 technologies you've barely touched — reviewers and parsers discount it.
